Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

What Is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that helps adults, children and young people identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviours. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is based on the principle that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected, and that negative or distorted thinking can contribute to emotional distress and unhelpful behaviour patterns. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is widely used today for treating a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating disorders.

How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Works

In Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the therapist works with the client to explore how their thoughts impact their emotions and actions. A key component of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is cognitive restructuring, where clients learn to recognise and challenge negative thought patterns, such as overgeneralisation, catastrophising, or black-and-white thinking, and replace them with more balanced, realistic thoughts

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is generally short-term and goal-oriented, focusing on specific issues rather than exploring the past. This practical approach gives clients the tools and skills they can use in their daily lives to manage challenges and reduce distress. Clients are often given “homework”, such as journaling or practicing relaxation techniques, to apply what they’ve learned outside of sessions

How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Helps

One of the major benefits we see of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is its effectiveness across a wide range of issues. Because Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is highly adaptable, it can be tailored to meet individual needs and specific issues, making it suitable for people of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults.

The structured and results-oriented nature of CBT makes it a widely accessible and practical form of therapy for anyone seeking to improve mental and emotional well-being.
